Using your Mac with no GUI

I’ve several times wanted to do this and for the life of me forgotten how, so this is as much a reminder to myself as anything else.

On the login screen, enter >console as the user id and hit enter. You will then be prompted for your username and password from within the console. Tada.

The Spins

The other morning I woke up to the alarm and found that the clock radio in specific and the room in general were shaking violently. Turns out it was all in my head. I’m proud to report that I’ve got Vestibular Neuronitis. According to this doctor and this article it’s pretty common among those who suffer sinus infections, like the one I had over Christmas. Both sources also confirm that I could have vertigo for as long as 6 weeks. Truth is, the novelty wears off after a few days.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty interesting to know that my brain is trying really hard to reconcile conflicting data from my eyes and my inner ear, but like a drunk who just wants to sober up after too much drinking, I’m also looking forward to the world to stop spinning and for thing to go back to normal. My doctor tells me I can do “astronaut’ exorcises that force the onset of vertigo to make the brain deal with it. Hmmm… sounds like fun.

3 Inches of Blood

If there is one thing I love doing, its going to a great metal show with my buddy Darren. A few weeks a go we went and saw 3 Inches of Blood which I think are one of the best metal bands to emerge in the last few years. They are one of the few bands that seem to remember that heavy metal shouldn’t be a musical genre for the world weary, 20 something, lower middle class nihilistic reject who thinks his life sucks and wants to share that opinion with anyone who will buy his album. No sir, 3 Inches of Blood would rather have you pumping your hands in the air and srcreaming “Destroy the Orcs”, or tossing your buddy Darren towards the stage to the crazy rhythm of “Premonition of Pain”. Rock on gentlemen, rock on.

Commuting

Allong with several other things in life that have begun to go my way, I’m back on a bike. Check out the new ride:

The commute is about 22 Km and takes just under an hour if I’m feeling strong and hit green lights. If I’m feeling a bit more tired and / or hit red lights it takes maybe and hour ten. Either way, it feels good to be riding again and getting some decent excercise every day.

Right now I take the bus home (the bus has a bike rack) most nights but I’m working towards reducing those trips.
